The water came on a Tuesday, and did not ask.

The embankment at Sikrah gave way. We arrived on the twelfth — three boats and a list of names the panchayat drew up two nights earlier.

A grandmother in Kursela carried two grandchildren on her back for nine kilometres. A teacher in Samastipur turned his rooftop into a classroom. A young man in Khagaria had not eaten in three days — gave his last roti to his neighbour's daughter.

Relief is not romantic. ₹250 feeds a family for 3 days. ₹1,000 feeds them for a fortnight. ₹5,000 puts a child back in school.

The kit reached us on the seventh morning. My daughter had stopped crying for food the night before.

They took my name, my sons' names. Three weeks later a volunteer called to ask if medicines worked.

I gave ₹250. The man read out kit 274 — said it would carry my name. I believe it.
